At Viveros González, explore the captivating Dragon Wing Begonia, belonging to the tuberous begonia group and part of the Begoniaceae family.
Originating from tropical and subtropical climates, begonias in general, including the Dragon Wing Begonia, are sensitive to cold temperatures, preferring moderate environments that aren't excessively dry or warm.
This perennial plant exhibits notable resilience, although it's crucial to shield it from extremely low temperatures. Direct exposure to sunlight can cause the edges of its leaves to take on reddish or brown hues and may cause them to curl, so it's advisable to place it in semi-shaded areas, such as under trees.
The substrate for this begonia should be rich and well-draining to ensure its optimal growth. Regular watering is essential to prevent the substrate from drying out excessively. Using fertilizers formulated for flowering plants is advisable, as the lack of nutrients can cause changes in leaf color, making them more coppery.
The Dragon Wing Begonia doesn't require manual deadheading, as its self-cleaning ability makes it incredibly easy to maintain. After winter, pruning is recommended, even to a considerable height, to shape the plant and encourage regrowth in spring.
Ensuring proper ventilation and an environment that isn't overly humid is important to prevent the onset of mildew. If fungal issues arise, it's advisable to trim the affected parts and treat the plant with a specific fungicide for its recovery.
