History of Calluna: Calluna, also known as Heather, Scotch Heather, Ling, and Heather Bell, is a plant belonging to the Ericaceae family. Native to Europe and Asia, this genus comprises eight species of shrubs that have captivated gardening enthusiasts for generations. Among the most notable species are Calluna vulgaris (with many varieties), Calluna atlantica, Calluna erica, and Calluna beleziana.

Description of Calluna: Calluna shrubs exhibit an upright or trailing growth habit, typically not exceeding one meter in height. Their tiny leaves, measuring just 2 mm in size, complement the abundant flowers that appear in terminal clusters in a variety of colors, including white, red, pink, and yellow. These flowers adorn the plant from summer through late autumn, providing a colorful spectacle throughout the season.

Care for Calluna - Watering and Fertilization: Calluna is a hardy plant that can thrive in various conditions. To ensure its health, it's essential to consider some key aspects:

  • Sun Exposure: While it prefers full sun exposure, Calluna can adapt to partial shade. However, it's essential to avoid intense heat, as it does not tolerate high temperatures well.

  • Soil: Calluna prefers acidic soils that are rich in organic matter, as it is intolerant of lime.

  • Watering: During spring and summer, water moderately. In the rest of the year, reduce the amount of water. Avoid overwatering, as it can damage the roots.

  • Fertilization: In late winter, light fertilization with manure is sufficient to keep Calluna healthy.

  • Pruning: In spring, prune away faded flowers to stimulate healthy growth.

  • Pests and Diseases: Calluna generally does not have serious issues with pests or diseases, making it easy to care for.

Adaptation to Cold and Heat: Calluna can withstand sporadic, low-intensity frosts, but it's preferable to keep the temperature above 5°C. Avoid extremely high temperatures, as the plant does not tolerate intense heat well.
