Known for its smaller-than-species leaves, Parthenocissus tricuspidata (Boston ivy) is a very vigorous, fast-growing, deciduous climber with mostly ovate or tri-lobed, deep green, lustrous leaves, 15 cm wide, turning brilliant shades of crimson, scarlet and burgundy in autumn.Normally hidden by foliage, the greenish-white flowers appear in the axils of the upper leaves in late spring and early summer. They give way to round, fleshy, blue-black berries, visible only after leaf fall, and only if birds have not eaten them. It is semi-evergreen in mild winter areas.Boston ivy can be used as a climbing vine or ground cover, as its leaves cover any surface in lush green before turning spectacular colours in autumn. However, the plant must be positioned with care. Its tendrils end in sticky spikes, which makes this vine cling to walls and difficult to remove. Although the tendrils do not penetrate and damage the wall by themselves, it is almost impossible to detach them from walls without taking part of the wall with them.It can grow up to 9-15 m tall and 1-3 m wide.It does best in full sun or part shade in medium, dry, well-drained soils. This plant is undemanding to soils and tolerates a wide range of conditions. It tolerates full shade, but best autumn colour is usually in sunny locations. Drought tolerant.A wonderfully hardy and almost indestructible vine for walls and buildings, large trellises, pergolas or fences. Also effective as ground cover to conceal tree stumps, rock piles and other unsightly elements, or for erosion control on slopes. Do not allow it to climb trees, as it will shade their leaves, thus depriving them of the sunlight they need.Easy to grow, it needs regular trimming to keep it within limits.Virtually disease free. Watch out for greenhouse spider mite and vine weevil. Propagated by layering or hardwood cuttings.
