Zantedeschia calla is a tropical perennial plant of the Araceae family from South Africa.

Although not considered true lilies, the calla lily (Zantedeschia sp.) is an extraordinary flower. This beautiful plant, available in a multitude of colours, grows from rhizomes and is ideal for use in flowerbeds and borders.

You can also grow calla lilies in pots, either outdoors or in a sunny window as houseplants. Here are some tips on growing calla lilies that will make them shine in your garden.

It is easy to grow calla lilies. These plants usually don't require too much attention. Proper planting and location are the only important things to keep in mind when growing them. Caring for calla lilies requires that they be planted in loose, well-drained soil.

They prefer to be located in full sun or partial shade in warmer climates. Calla lilies are usually planted in spring. However, wait until the threat of frost has passed and the soil has warmed up sufficiently before planting.

They should be planted fairly deep, about 10 cm for best results, and about 30 cm apart. Once planted, the area should be well watered. They like to be kept moist and also need a monthly dose of fertiliser during the growing season.

As with planting, not too much is required to care for Calla lilies, apart from keeping them watered and fertilised. An adequate layer of mulch around the plants will help keep the area moist and weed free.

Calla lilies need a period of dormancy once flowering has ceased. During this time, you should refrain from watering as much to allow the plant to die back. If you grow calla lilies in pots, stop watering and move the plant to a dark area when the foliage has withered. Regular watering can be resumed in two to three months.

Although calla lilies can remain in the ground year-round in warmer climates, they should be lifted and stored in cooler areas. Dig up the rhizomes in autumn, usually after the first frost, and shake the soil. Let them dry out for a few days before storing the rhizomes for the winter.

Calla lilies should be kept in peat moss and placed in a cool, dry, preferably dark place until warmer temperatures return in spring. Alternatively, you may choose to plant your calla lilies indoors in late winter and transplant them outdoors in spring.

Calla lilies can also be divided when they emerge or during their dormant period. Growing calla lilies is easy and care is minimal. Choosing to grow calla lilies in the garden or as houseplants is a great way to add colour to any area. These tips on growing calla lilies will help you enjoy these beautiful flowers even more.
