The Polyscias genus, part of the Araliaceae family, consists of about 100 species of shrubs and trees originating from tropical regions of the Pacific and Australia.
Description and Characteristics:
These are perennial shrubs that usually do not exceed one meter in height when grown in pots. Their leaves are bright green and rounded in shape, with some varieties featuring variegated leaves. They are commonly used as indoor and greenhouse plants.
General Care:
- Light: Polyscias requires well-lit exposure but should be kept away from direct sunlight.
- Humidity and Temperature: This plant thrives in high ambient humidity and temperatures that should not drop below 18 °C throughout the year.
- Soil: The ideal soil for these shrubs would be a mix of 1/3 peat, 1/3 coarse sand, and 1/3 leaf mould. It is advisable to transplant them every year in spring to a slightly larger pot.
- Watering: Water this plant with small amounts of water regularly; wait for the soil to dry on the surface before watering again.
- Pruning: Pruning is not necessary.
- Fertilization: Fertilize every 15 days with mineral fertilizer during the spring and summer.
Pests:
- If the environment is dry, they can be susceptible to pests such as scale insects and spider mites.
Propagation:
- Polyscias can be propagated from apical cuttings, although it is often more advisable to purchase specimens from garden centers and plant stores.
With the right care, Polyscias can be a lush and attractive addition to indoor environments, bringing a touch of the tropics to your home or greenhouse.
