Convolvulus sabatius belongs to the family Convolvulaceae and consists of more than 600 species of (mostly) herbaceous climbing plants with a cosmopolitan distribution.
It is commonly known by the names of bluebell, daylily, daylily and marigold and the scientific synonym of Convolvulus mauritanicus.
They are herbaceous plants with a creeping or ground-covering habit that barely reach 20 cm in height. They have many small, oval, greyish-green leaves. The most interesting feature is the abundant blue or lilac trumpet-shaped flowers that bloom in summer and part of autumn.
They can be used in rockeries, in borders and to cover slopes and banks. They are suitable for pots especially in places with cold winters as they allow them to be sheltered.
This plant needs full sun exposure to flower properly. It must be taken into account that on cloudy days the flowers do not open. It does not like frost or prolonged intense cold.
The soil should be very well drained, preferring sandy soils containing a little organic matter.
It should be watered moderately, waiting until the soil is very dry before adding more water.
This plant should be fertilised with a little compost in early spring.
It is important to give them a training pruning at the end of winter so that they grow back more vigorously.
They are fairly resistant to pests and diseases but not to excess moisture.
It is a plant that can be propagated from seeds sown in spring in its final location and by division of the bush at the same time.
