Mandevilla amabilis

Mandevilla amabilis is an evergreen climbing plant, native to South America. It belongs to the Apocynaceae family.

It is a high-rise plant, whose main attraction lies in its large bell-shaped flowers. During the summer, these flowers give off a very soft aroma.

It needs many hours of light, but always avoiding direct sun. It is also important to protect it from the wind. The substrate must be fertile and well drained, so a mixture of peat and sand is often used.

As it is a plant native to tropical rainforests, it needs a lot of environmental humidity and a temperature above 10 or 15 ºC. You shall keep the substrate moist at all times and spray the leaves with water.

A deep pruning in the fall, when the flowering period is over, will allow the plant to bloom again more vigorously the following spring.

The most common pests that affect this plant are the red spider and the cottony mealybug.
