The shrub Cytisus maderensis, also known as Genista maderensis, the Madeira broom, belongs to the Fabaceae family.

This plant is endemic to Madeira. It grows inland, between 100 and 1500 m altitude and is quite well adapted in outdoor cultivation to the Mediterranean or mild oceanic climate.

This is a shrub that can reach 6 to 7 m in height in the wild, but in cultivation it does not usually exceed 2 m in height.

It tends to like moderately rich and draining soils, but avoiding drying out. The pH should be neutral to acidic.

It is a moderately hardy plant, easily withstands down to -5°C, or -7°C once integrated in cultivation.

To keep it compact and very green, it is cut every year, just after flowering.
