The genus Coreopsis belongs to the Asteraceae family, consisting of more than 300 species of perennial and annual plants native to Africa, Asia and America. 

It is commonly known as Semiramis, Buttercup, Maritime dahlia and Poet's eye.

Coreopsis are herbaceous plants with smooth, linear leaves around the stem. The flowers, usually yellow, appear at the end of the stem and are similar to daisies. They bloom in the summer season and can bloom until almost winter.

It is used as a cut flower and to form flower beds in the garden in combination with other flowers such as Cosmos, Zinnias and Callistephus.

The Coreopsis plant needs full sun exposure and protection from the wind. Although they are not picky about soil, they prefer well-drained soils with plenty of organic matter. Annual species do not need transplanting, as the seeds are sown where they are to remain permanently. Perennials can be transplanted in spring.

Watering should be moderate all year round and increased a little in summer. An annual garden fertiliser is sufficient for annuals, but perennials should be given monthly mineral fertiliser from spring until early autumn.

This type of plant can be attacked, especially in summer, by spider mites and aphids. Coreopsis is propagated by seeds sown in late winter.
