The genus Davallia, to which this fern belongs, is made up of about 40 species of ferns originating from different places such as the Mediterranean basin, tropical Asia, Australia, the Canary Islands, Malaysia and Polynesia.

This plant is a rather creeping fern with rhizomatous and scaly roots that can be epiphytic, living on other plants without parasitizing them, or living on the ground. The fronds (leaves) are bright green and triangular in shape. They can reach more than 50 cm in height. They do not produce flowers.

They are easy to grow and are used as house and greenhouse plants.

The spider fern, or rabbit's foot as it is also known, needs semi-shade or filtered light but never direct sunlight. The temperature should not fall below 10°C.

It likes soil that is very well drained and compact.

It should be watered sparingly in spring and summer but sprayed often with lukewarm water without lime; the rest of the year water less. The best way to water these ferns (as soon as the soil starts to dry out) is to immerse the pot in water and drain it well.

It is advisable to prune the parts of the plant that are dry or dead.

It is advisable to fertilise every 25 days with a liquid fertiliser for indoor plants in spring and summer.

We must avoid lack of water, as it will start to have greyish, drooping leaves.

They are propagated in winter by dividing the rhizomes by cutting pieces of about 10 cm with buds and roots to root them in peat.
