Plants of the genus Brassica belong to the Brassicaceae family and their species are native to the Mediterranean.

It is commonly known by the names of ornamental cabbage, kohlrabi, ornamental cabbage and gonchi.

These plants have an annual life cycle. Its trimmed and curly leaves are very abundant. At the beginning they are green and when the cold weather sets in, they start to turn red, yellow, white, pink....

They are ideal plants for the winter either in the garden in flowerbeds and borders or in pots on patios, balconies and terraces.

Brassica oleracea needs a sunny and cool exposure and its ideal temperature is around 15ºC.

The ideal soil for these cabbages should consist of 1 part sand, 3 parts heath soil and 2 parts peat, although it can live in well-drained soils with a good supply of organic matter. In case of transplanting, it is advisable to do it at the beginning of winter.

Watering should be abundant, as it is a plant that needs a lot of water. Fertilise fortnightly with a foliar fertiliser.

This plant is very prone to attack by caterpillars and aphids.

It can be propagated from seeds sown at the end of summer.
