Lomandra longifolia is an perennial herbaceous plant, evergreen, clump shape, which belongs to the Xanthorrhoeaceae family and native to all the eastern coast of Australia.

This clumps are formed by very narrow and erect leaves of shiny green color growing up to a height of between 40 and 100cms. Leaves normally are taller that the floral stem.

Flowers are fragrant, and are formed by dense inflorescens in spike shape of even 50cms long, which contain dense clusters of tiny flowers all along the flat stem. Finally seeds appears in brown capsules which will stay for long period on the plant.

Lomandra longifolia thrives in so many different types of habit, since sand dunes, to open woods, stream banks or tropical forests. This plant if not in flower can be perfectly confused for a normal grass or weed.

In gardening terms is a very versatile plant as it can be used in different ways such as to form small hedges, or to delimitate a path, in groups or like a ground cover or even in containers and pots.

Spiny head or basket grass can be grown indoors and outdoors. For a better growth moderate waters is recommended but it withstand long periods of drought as well as short periods of damp.

Regarding pruning it can be trim when we notice the plant is ugly. Trim like a ball as about 1/3 of the plant. For a rejuvenating prun, cut such as 20-30cms above the ground also like a spherical shape to make it more aesthetical.

Lomandra longifolia is not propensity to deseases or garden pests.
