Description:
Chamomile is a cheerful plant that can add beauty to a garden while also possessing sedative qualities. There are two types of chamomile: Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) and German chamomile (Matricaria recutita). The Roman variety is the true chamomile. It is a creeping plant that grows forming a mat. It bears small daisy-like flowers with yellow centers and white petals. Its leaves are feathery, and it is a perennial plant.
Cultivation:
The best time to plant chamomile is in spring, either from seeds or plants. While it's easier to establish chamomile in your garden from plants or divisions rather than seeds, growing chamomile from seeds is also relatively easy. Chamomile thrives in cool conditions and should be planted in partial shade, although it can also grow in full sun. The soil should be dry.
Care:
Once your chamomile is established, it requires very little care. Like most hardy plants, chamomile grows best when left alone. Too much fertilizer will result in excessive foliage with a weak flavor and fewer flowers. Chamomile is drought-tolerant and only needs to be watered in times of prolonged drought.
Pests and Diseases:
For the most part, chamomile is not affected by many pests. It is often recommended as a companion plant to be planted in the vegetable garden, as its strong aroma keeps pests away. That being said, a chamomile plant weakened by lack of water or other problems may be attacked by aphids, scale insects, or thrips.
