It is commonly known as Indoor Aralia and Japanese Aralia. This species comes from southern Japan.
They are highly branched evergreen shrubs that grow up to 4 metres high. The attractive lobed leaves measure up to 45 cm in diameter and are bright green on the upper side and light green on the underside: variegated leaf varieties are available. They produce white flowers in umbels above the leaves. They flower in autumn but do not usually flower indoors.
They are often used as house plants, greenhouse, terrace and balcony plants and as single specimens or in bushy groups in the garden.
This plant needs a filtered light or semi-shade exposure, the variegated-leaved plants need direct sun in the early morning hours. In winter it needs a rest at 10-13 ºC.
The soil this plant likes can be a normal garden soil outdoors or a commercial substrate for indoor plants if it is grown in pots. Transplanting is done in spring or autumn.
Water frequently so that the substrate is always moist and reduce watering a lot in winter, if the temperature is below 10 ºC do not water them. Spray the leaves with lime-free water in summer if it is very hot and ventilate them properly. Periodically clean the leaves with a damp cloth.
It is advisable to fertilise it every 3 weeks with mineral fertiliser during the summer.
It is a plant that accepts light pruning in early spring to maintain a compact habit.
Fatsia Japonica can be attacked by mealy bugs and spider mites if the ambient humidity is dry and the ventilation is not adequate.
It is a plant that is propagated from seeds sown in spring and by cuttings in early spring or late summer; use rooting hormones.
