The genus Verbena, belonging to the Verbenaceae family, comprises about 250 species of herbaceous and semiarbuscular plants found on all continents. One of these species, Verbena rigida, is native to southern Brazil and northern Argentina. With its rich and diverse history, this plant has become a favorite in gardens around the world.

Description: Verbena rigida, also known as Verbena rigida, is a semi-evergreen plant that can lose its leaves in very cold winters, but resprouts in spring with vigor. Its growth is creeping or drooping, spreading by stolons and reaching up to half a meter in height. Its leaves are vibrant green, oppositely arranged, lanceolate in shape and with serrated edges. However, what makes it truly special are its abundant and colorful flowers, which can be purple, pink or blue, depending on the variety. These flowers appear in heads that completely cover the plant, creating a spectacle of color during the summer and fall.

Care - Watering and fertilizing: To care for your Stiff Verbena, it is important to remember that it needs full sun and warm temperatures. Although it can withstand frosts as low as -10 °C, in cold climates it can lose its leaves, which will resprout in spring. The soil should be well drained and contain some organic matter. Transplant it in spring, when the roots begin to show under the pot.

As for watering, it is essential to keep it moderate and wait until the soil is almost dry before watering again. Avoid waterlogging the plant and focus on moistening the soil rather than the leaves and flowers. In spring, you can fertilize with organic matter, but do not overdo it.

Adaptation to cold and heat: Stiff Verbenas are heat tolerant and thrive in warm climates. They can tolerate moderate frosts, but their true beauty unfolds in milder temperatures. If you live in an area with cold winters, you can protect them during this season and enjoy their resurgence in spring.

Propagation and maintenance: After flowering, they should be lightly pruned to remove faded flowers and encourage the next bloom. These plants multiply easily from seeds sown in spring in a seedbed. Cover the seeds with a thin layer of soil and place dark paper over them to encourage germination. Keep the substrate moist but not waterlogged. In addition, Verbenas tiesas are relatively resistant to common pests and usually thrive with proper care.
