Strelitzia augusta . C22/25

Strelitzia augusta also known as Strelitzia alba , is an herbaceous evergreen plant that belongs to the family of strelitziaceae.

It is a very striking plant due  of its resemblance to a banana tree and its large leaves that can reach up more than one meter in height which makes it looks very tropical.  Flowers are formed by a purple bract and white petals, that emerge several times a year when the plant is mature after 5-7 years.

Strelitzia augusta is a drought resistance plant once completely established.

It suffers from cold winds which will produce tears on the leaves, something normal. To keep its appearance as perfec as possible better not to expose it to winds or to place it indoors with plenty on light and far away from heaters.

If potted, it is advisable repot it into bigger pot every 3 years during spring.

Use an universal substrate mix with a top soil organic media to provide consistence and drain.

Add new soil every spring, this way it will receive new nutrients every season.

Strelitzia augusta needs to be clean now and then by removing the withered leaves and those spoilt ones.

Do not overwater and give a time between waterings for the soil to completely dry.

Try to keep your strelitzia clean and healthy to avoid the risk of garden plagues  such as cochineals.
