Aralia Elegantísima or False Aralia is a very fragile evergreen shrub, which belongs to the araliaceae family and comes from the dense and humid forests of New Caledonia.
Its peculiarity is its light, thin, bronze-coloured leaves.
Due to its hardiness and ease of cultivation, it has traditionally been planted in doorways or courtyards where it thrives even without much care.
The Aralia Elegantísima is a born survivor, and very versatile, as it can be grown indoors, on patios and terraces and also in shady areas of the garden.
It needs well-fertilised and moist soil, without waterlogging. It also needs humidity in the air. Its leaves can be sprayed.
It does not usually grow very fast so we can remove its withered leaves, which will be those of the lower part of the plant. As a result, and with time, the lower part of the plant can look leafless, with just the trunk.
If we want a more rounded plant, we can prune it very low in spring.
We have to watch our Aralia to avoid attacks of cottony mealybug and red spider mite, when the environment is too warm and dry. If it is affected by any of these diseases, an insecticide should be applied.
