Origin and Description:

Bougainvillea is a perennial climbing plant or shrub in areas with year-round rainfall, and deciduous in regions with rainy and dry periods. It belongs to the family Nyctaginaceae. Its branches are long and sprawling, with thorns. Varieties such as "Spectabilis" and "Glabra Sanderiana" exhibit specific characteristics in terms of bracts and branch structure.

History:

Bougainvillea is native to South America, specifically Brazil. It was discovered by the French explorer Louis Antoine de Bougainville in the 18th century, from whom it takes its name.

Care:

It is a very resilient plant and can grow in any type of soil, although it prefers direct planting in the ground. It can also be cultivated in pots and planters, provided they have sufficient depth and meet its fertilizer demands. A good drainage system is essential, as it does not tolerate waterlogging. It requires fertilization with special fertilizers for climbers from April to June. Pruning is necessary to maintain its shape and can be done during the growing season and at the beginning of spring.

Watering:

Watering should be more frequent during the summer and reduced from autumn onwards, with occasional watering in winter. Bougainvillea can withstand periods of drought but does not tolerate waterlogging.

Pruning:

Pruning can be done as needed, especially during the growing season to achieve the desired shape. Rejuvenation pruning is practiced in spring.

Trivia:

An interesting fact about this plant is that it tends to have long branches that need to be supported and guided for optimal growth.

Pest Control:

Bougainvillea can be attacked by cottony cushion scale. To combat this, systemic or direct insecticides are recommended as needed.
