A wonderful floral fragrance fills the air as certain flowers begin to open with the arrival of night.

Some aromatic plants are perfect for enjoying summer evenings because their flowers open at dusk and release a beautifully pleasant scent.

In this post, we have put together a selection of some of the best plants for creating exactly that atmosphere.

The most famous are jasmine and night-blooming jasmine — and yes, they are both on this list — but there are plenty more to discover.

Plants that will fill your summer nights with fragrance

All the plants we have selected flower during the warmer months. What makes them even more special is that their fragrance becomes particularly intense at dusk or during the night.

Night-blooming jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum)

We begin with one of the true stars of summer evenings.

Night-blooming jasmine is an evergreen or semi-evergreen shrub, depending on the climate, and it can grow several metres tall.

During the warmer months, it produces small white or greenish flowers which, as the sun goes down, release an intensely sweet fragrance.

It enjoys bright locations and copes well with high temperatures. However, if you live somewhere with extremely hot summers, make sure it is protected from direct sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

It also needs regular watering during summer, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly before watering again.

Common jasmine (Jasminum officinale)

If there is one undisputed queen of summer nights, it has to be jasmine.

This climbing plant produces numerous white flowers with a sweet, intense fragrance that becomes particularly noticeable when night falls.

It is widely used to cover pergolas, trellises, walls and fences.

Jasmine loves light and grows best when it receives several hours of direct sunlight each day. Make sure you water it fairly frequently, however. Ideally, the soil should remain slightly moist without becoming waterlogged.

When grown in the right conditions, it can fill your garden with a wonderful fragrance throughout the summer.

Madagascar jasmine (Stephanotis floribunda)

Despite its name, Madagascar jasmine belongs to a different plant family from common jasmine. Even so, the two plants do have several things in common.

To begin with, Madagascar jasmine is also a climbing plant and produces glossy green leaves. Its flowers grow in small clusters and have a beautiful star-like shape.

And of course, one of its most remarkable features is the fragrance of its flowers — which is exactly why it has earned a place on this list!

It prefers warm, humid environments and needs plenty of light to flower properly. During summer, it will appreciate a bright location protected from the strongest midday sun.

Regular watering is also important during its growing and flowering season.

It is quite sensitive to cold, so in areas with cooler winters it is best grown in a pot so that it can be moved somewhere protected when temperatures begin to fall.

Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)

If you are looking for a hardy, fast-growing climber with beautifully fragrant flowers, Japanese honeysuckle is an excellent choice.

Its flowers start out white and gradually develop yellowish tones as they age. During flowering, they release a sweet fragrance that becomes stronger towards the evening.

It can also grow quite quickly, making it ideal for covering fences, pergolas and other garden structures.

Honeysuckle adapts well to different light conditions, although a bright position will encourage more abundant flowering.

During summer, regular watering is recommended, especially if the plant is grown in a pot or receives several hours of direct sunlight.

You should also bear its vigorous growth in mind. Given enough space and good growing conditions, it can spread considerably, so regular pruning will help keep it under control.

Cape jasmine (Gardenia jasminoides)

Cape jasmine stands out for its large white flowers and characteristic sweet fragrance.

It is a perfect plant to place near a terrace, porch or window, allowing you to enjoy its perfume during summer afternoons and evenings.

However, gardenias do have slightly more specific requirements than some of the other plants on this list.

They are acid-loving plants, meaning they need soil with a low pH as well as a fertiliser suitable for acid-loving species.

They also prefer bright locations protected from strong midday sunlight and require a certain level of moisture in the soil during the warmer months.

If you can provide the conditions they need, they will reward you with spectacular and wonderfully fragrant flowers.

Four o’clock flower (Mirabilis jalapa)

Its name already gives us a clue.

The four o’clock flower produces trumpet-shaped blooms that begin to open towards the end of the afternoon and remain open throughout the night.

During these hours, they release a sweet fragrance that attracts different nocturnal pollinators.

You can also find varieties with pink, yellow, white and red flowers, or even several colours on the same plant.

It is a relatively easy plant to care for and adapts particularly well to warm summers.

It prefers a sunny position or partial shade and appreciates regular watering during the hottest months.

It is a fantastic choice for filling your garden with colour during the day and enjoying its fragrance once night falls.

As you can see, there are plenty of options for creating a garden or terrace that truly comes to life when the sun goes down.

You can use climbing plants such as jasmine and honeysuckle to cover a pergola, place a gardenia close to your terrace, or dedicate a special corner to plants as distinctive as night-blooming jasmine.
