“I’d love to have trees, but my garden is just too small.”

This is something we often hear from our customers.

But as we always explain, having a small garden doesn’t mean you have to give up on planting trees.

The key is choosing species that don’t grow too large and adapt well to smaller spaces.

And the trees on this list are perfect examples.

Nine beautiful options that either stay relatively small or can be kept at a manageable size through pruning. There’s something for everyone: flowering trees, fruit trees, evergreens and more.

Let’s take a look.

9 Small Trees Perfect for Gardens with Limited Space

Before choosing a tree, remember that its final size depends on several factors, including the variety, climate, soil conditions and pruning.

That’s why, as well as considering its height, it’s important to think about how much space its canopy will need as it matures.

With that in mind, here are some of our favourite trees for small gardens.

1. Japanese Maple (Acer palmatum)

Let’s start with one of the great classics of small garden design.

The Japanese maple is a slow-growing tree with an elegant shape, best known for its distinctive, deeply lobed leaves.

Its most spectacular display comes in autumn, when the foliage turns beautiful shades of red, orange and yellow before falling.

There are also many varieties available in different sizes, including compact cultivars that remain just a few metres tall.

It prefers bright locations sheltered from intense afternoon sun and appreciates soil that retains some moisture.

2. Crape Myrtle (Lagerstroemia indica)

If you’re looking for a small tree that will fill your garden with colour throughout summer, this one is definitely worth considering.

Lagerstroemia indica produces stunning clusters of flowers in shades of pink, white, red or purple, depending on the variety.

It grows relatively slowly, and compact varieties are available that make it easy to keep the tree at a suitable size for smaller spaces.

As it matures, it also develops a beautifully smooth, decorative bark that adds year-round interest.

Give it plenty of sunshine if you want to enjoy an abundant display of flowers.

3. Strawberry Tree (Arbutus unedo)

The strawberry tree is an excellent choice if you're looking for a hardy Mediterranean tree.

It's evergreen, so it keeps its attractive green foliage throughout the year.

It also produces its distinctive round, red fruits alongside delicate, bell-shaped white flowers.

It can be grown either as a small tree or a shrub and responds well to pruning, making it a particularly good option for compact gardens.

4. Pomegranate Tree (Punica granatum)

Another wonderful choice for Mediterranean gardens.

The pomegranate is a small tree that generally develops a fairly manageable canopy, although it can also be grown as a shrub.

During the warmer months, it produces vibrant orange-red flowers that later develop into pomegranates.

It loves sunshine and tolerates heat extremely well, making it a great option for gardens on the Costa del Sol.

5. Olive Tree (Olea europaea)

Few trees are more closely associated with the Mediterranean landscape.

The olive tree grows slowly and responds very well to pruning, allowing you to control the size and shape of its canopy to suit the available space.

Its silvery-green leaves and characteristic trunk also make it an excellent ornamental tree.

Just make sure you choose a sunny position with well-drained soil.

Once established, olive trees are well adapted to hot conditions and periods of drought.

6. Orange Tree (Citrus × sinensis)

The orange tree develops a rounded canopy that can be kept at a manageable size with careful pruning.

When it flowers, it produces its famous orange blossoms: delicate white flowers that fill the garden with a wonderful fragrance.

These are followed by oranges, adding even more colour to the tree.

Like the lemon tree, it needs a sunny position and thrives in areas with mild winters.

7. Star Magnolia (Magnolia stellata)

Magnolia stellata has two characteristics that make it particularly suitable for small gardens: slow growth and a naturally compact shape.

In early spring, it produces beautiful white flowers made up of numerous long, narrow petals.

The display is particularly striking because the flowers appear before the leaves.

It can be grown as a small tree or a shrub and prefers bright locations protected from the strongest sunshine.

8. Standard Chinese Fringe Flower (Loropetalum chinense)

Loropetalum chinense is another highly decorative option for smaller gardens.

Depending on the variety, its foliage can range from green to deep red or purple, while its distinctive flowers feature long, slender, ribbon-like petals.

When trained as a standard, with a clear trunk and rounded canopy, it takes on the appearance of a charming miniature ornamental tree.

Regular pruning helps maintain its compact shape, making it especially practical when garden space is limited.

9. Plum Tree (Prunus domestica)

If you’d love to grow your own fruit, a plum tree is another option well worth considering.

Certain varieties and growing methods make it possible to keep plum trees at a suitable size for smaller gardens.

In spring, the branches become covered in delicate white flowers, which later develop into plums.

To encourage good flowering and fruit production, plum trees need plenty of sunshine.

When choosing your tree, always check the mature size of the particular variety you’re interested in.
