Christmas is synonymous with Poinsettia flowers.
With the first months of cold weather, the poinsettia begins to cover itself with its famous red leaves (which are actually bracts).
But did you know all the uses you can give to this plant during the holidays?
Because it's not just about having it in a pot; there are many ways to make it the star of our Christmas decoration.
In this post, we've brought you several very original ideas that you will love, and that you can also put into practice with the little ones.
And what if crafts are not your thing?
Don't worry, we've thought about that too.
At the end of the post, we'll tell you how you can have a beautiful poinsettia decoration without having to pick up the scissors.
But first, let's take a look at those craft ideas.
7 ideas to decorate with Poinsettias this Christmas
An important note.
On the Internet, you'll find many decoration ideas that use only the red bracts of the plant.
But we are more in favor of using the whole plant and keeping it alive.
So, while it serves as decoration, you still have a living being in your house that breathes, and that you can continue to care for even after the holidays (plus, if you take good care of it, the bracts will grow again year after year).
Now, let's get to work.
Note: all the images in this post were taken from the website Stars of Europe.
1. Personalized pots
We said we were going to leave the entire plant alive inside its pot.
And that means that the pot itself can be used as an additional decorative element in the composition.
Here are a couple of ideas for you.
A. With a jute bag
Do you usually buy sweet coal for your children? These sweets are very cute and sell well during the holidays. And some even come in a small cloth bag, as if it were real coal.
But when the sweets are gone, the bag is thrown away, right?
Well, not this year.
This year we're going to use it to give our Poinsettia a different look.
The process is as simple as putting the pot inside the bag (you can use a plant pot cover first to prevent water from the watering from wetting the fabric underneath).
Then, around the bag, tie a bow like the one in the image.
And with something so simple, you have a decorative element different from the usual.
But wait, we're just getting started.
B. With letters
In this case, what you'll need are ribbons with colorful patterns, like the ones in the image.
What you have to do with them is create shapes (they can be letters or whatever you can think of) on top of the pot. Or, if the pot you have your poinsettia in is too dark, you can use a white plant pot cover like the one in the image.
Again, the process is very simple and only requires a bit of imagination.
C. With embossed decoration
Here, we're stepping it up a bit.
This time, we're not going to settle for simple decoration; we're going to go further and create a pot with relief.
How?
Well, here's a video from the "El Taller de Ire" channel that explains the step-by-step process.
If you have kids, it's a great idea for doing crafts together. They will surely have a great time.
2. Hanging pots
Who said that the poinsettia isn't a hanging plant?
So, if the plant doesn't hang, we'll do it with the pot.
For this craft, you will need some materials (they are very easy to find):
- Metal cans (or any other container where you can place the pot and that can be perforated).
- A screwdriver.
- Thick cords.
- Hot glue.
And, of course, as many poinsettias as you want to hang.
The process is as follows:
-
With the screwdriver, make two holes on opposite sides of the can, near the edge. Try to make them at the same height.
-
Insert the ends of the cords into the holes and tie a knot to prevent them from coming out.
-
Wrap the cans with the cords, gluing them with hot glue. You can put some other decorative element on the cords.
-
Finally, hang the cans and place the poinsettias inside.
And there you have it!
3. Decoration with recycled materials
With these ideas, you will not only generate less waste, but it can also serve to teach the little ones the importance of recycling.
Let's see them.
A. Pots with candies
This proposal seemed very original to us.
All you need is a large, transparent vase and something to fill it with.
In the image, they used candies with typical Christmas colors, but you can use anything: rubber balls, hydrogel pearls, marbles... (although if you use candies, you might save yourself a visit to the dentist).
You can use a few drops of glue to stick the candies together, but try not to let the glue touch the glass or it will become translucent.
B. Decorative boxes
Do you have a box lying around that you're thinking of throwing away?
Well, give it a second life as a Christmas "plant pot".
In this case, we recommend letting your imagination run wild
In this case, we recommend letting your imagination run wild and decorating the box however you like. You can paint it, add embossed decorations (as shown in the video we shared earlier), or wrap it with a ribbon, as seen in the image.
Decorate to your liking, whether it's your own taste or that of the little ones in the house.
4. Christmas Centerpiece
But when it comes to decorating with poinsettias, we can't forget this essential classic:
Poinsettia centerpieces.
Place poinsettias in a vase or a wooden box. You can accompany them with other typical Christmas elements, such as pine branches, pinecones, or candles.
The combination of vibrant colors and natural elements creates a perfect focal point for your Christmas dinners.
Moreover, it's super easy to set up!
5. Chair Decorations
Add a festive touch to the chairs by tying small bouquets of poinsettias with matching ribbons.
If you want to go a step further, you can hang small bells or even place cards with Christmas details.
It's a simple way to extend the decoration to the entire table.
7. Poinsettia Wreath
Create your own Christmas wreath with poinsettias. You can hang it on your door to welcome visitors with a cozier touch.
Combine the flowers with colorful ribbons and some Christmas ornaments for a unique piece.
To show you how to do it, we've included a video that demonstrates how to make one of these Christmas wreaths step by step (they use foam flowers in the video, but you can do the same with real poinsettias).
