Wondering about how to take care or parsley? How to grow this culinary plant at home

Parsley is one of those all-purpose culinary plants.

We can add it to the stew, to the fish-dishes, to the lentils… and it gives everything a very special flavour.

Not to mention that it has a lot of properties:

  • It relieves gases.
  • It is antioxidant.
  • It contains minerals, iron and calcium.
  • It is good for skin, nails and hair.

It is a wonder!

Of course... if you really want to enjoy parsley with all its flavour and its properties intact, the best way is to take it directly from the pot and put it on the plate.

And for that you need to grow it at home.

The good?

That doing it is very easy.

You just have to apply the parsley care that we tell you about in this post.

Go for it!

The main care of parsley that you should know

The good thing about parsley is that it is a fairly independent plant, which does not require excessive care.

But there are some things you should keep in mind.

Light

Parsley likes a lot of light.

It needs to be in an area of the house where the sun reaches for several hours a day, because that will make it germinate and grow healthy.

Of course, be careful not to expose it to direct sunlight for too many hours, because you could burn its leaves (and all the flavour would be lost). It is best if you have it in a pot near a window, so that it receives indirect light for many hours a day.

Irrigation

Parsley likes to have the soil always moist, especially when it is germinating.

But as we always say, be careful: excess water is more harmful to plants than drought.

When you water, make sure that no puddles form, especially at the bottom of the pot (where the roots could rot).

Make sure that the substrate where you plant it has good drainage to avoid problems. If you want, you can also place some stones at the bottom of the pot to make it easier for the water to drain.

Pruning

Like all plants, parsley develops flowers. In his case, they are small floral groups that are born in summer.

The problem is that if the parsley flowers, the plant stops putting out new stems. That is why it is recommended that you remove the flower stems as they appear.

In addition, it is also good that you remove the leaves or stems that are dry or diseased, because that will allow the rest to have enough energy to continue growing.

Pests

It is unusual for parsley to suffer from pests, especially if we have it indoors.

But in the event that you have it in an orchard or garden and you see that pests begin to appear (the most common are aphids), it is best to apply a specific phytosanitary product to prevent them from spreading.

Do you want to plant parsley at home? This is how you should do it

There are different ways to grow parsley at home, but the easiest is to directly sow the seeds in a pot.

This is something you can do at any time of the year (although, being a Mediterranean plant, in winter it is somewhat more lethargic and takes longer to germinate due to the cold).

The process is as follows:

  1. Fill a pot with substrate, place the seeds and cover them with a centimetre of soil.
  2. Water it frequently, keeping the soil always moist. After 15 days or so (a little more if it is winter) you will see the first shoots appear.
  3. After about 2 months, the plant will have grown enough to start taking buds. Remember to use scissors to make clean cuts so that the stems are not damaged. Also, avoid doing it in the middle of the day, when it is hotter.

You can buy the seeds or get them from the flowers that you are cutting.
