Name: Calathea
Origin: Tropical rainforests of Central and South America, especially Brazil, Colombia, and the Amazon basin.

History:
Calatheas have been appreciated for centuries by indigenous communities in the Amazon, who used the sturdy leaves for wrapping food or crafting traditional items. In the 19th century, European plant hunters introduced them as exotic houseplants, and their decorative foliage quickly made them popular among collectors and plant lovers. Today, they remain prized for their vibrant patterns and elegant, tropical look.

Care:
Calatheas require a bit of attention, but they reward care with stunning foliage. They thrive in warm, humid environments and dislike direct sunlight or drafts.

  • Light: Prefers bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and fade their patterns.

  • Temperature: Ideal range is 18°C to 24°C (64°F to 75°F). Keep away from cold and sudden temperature changes.

  • Humidity: High humidity is essential. Mist regularly, place on a pebble tray with water, or use a humidifier to keep the air moist.

  • Soil: Needs a well-draining, airy mix rich in organic matter. A blend of peat, perlite, and coconut fiber works well.

  • Pot: Use a pot with drainage holes to prevent root rot.

Curiosity:
Often called a “prayer plant,” the Calathea moves its leaves up at night and opens them during the day—a movement known as nyctinasty. This natural rhythm protects the plant from moisture loss and helps maximize light absorption.

Watering:

  • Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy.

  • Always water with low-mineral water (filtered, distilled, or rainwater) to avoid leaf damage caused by hard water.

  • In summer, water 2–3 times a week depending on conditions. In winter, reduce to once every 7–10 days.

Pruning:
No structural pruning is needed. Simply remove dried or damaged leaves at the base with clean scissors. This encourages new growth and keeps the plant looking tidy and vibrant.
