Name: Maranta leuconeura (also known as Prayer Plant)
Origin: Tropical regions of South America, especially Brazil.

History:
Named after 16th-century Italian botanist Bartolomeo Maranta, this plant has long been admired for its beautifully patterned foliage. Since the 19th century, it has become a favorite in homes and greenhouses for its unique leaf movements and striking colors. In many cultures, it symbolizes gratitude, peace, and spiritual reflection.

Care:
Maranta is relatively easy to care for if kept in a warm, humid environment with soft light.

• Light: Prefers bright, indirect light or partial shade. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves and fade their colors.

• Temperature: Best between 18 °C and 26 °C. Keep away from cold drafts and temperatures below 15 °C.

• Humidity: High humidity is essential. Mist regularly or place on a humidity tray. It thrives in bathrooms or with a nearby humidifier.

• Soil: Loose, well-draining soil rich in organic matter. A mix of peat, coco fiber, and perlite is ideal.

• Pot: Use a pot with good drainage. Maranta spreads horizontally and does well in hanging or shallow containers.

Fun Fact:
Maranta is famous for its daily leaf movement—its leaves lie flat during the day and fold upward at night, resembling hands in prayer. This behavior is called nyctinasty and gives the plant its popular name: Prayer Plant.

Watering:

• Keep the soil slightly moist but never soggy.

• Water when the top layer of soil starts to dry out.

• Use filtered or rainwater to avoid leaf damage from hard water.

• In winter, reduce watering but don’t let the plant dry out completely.

Pruning:
No regular pruning needed. Simply remove any dry or damaged leaves at the base. You can also trim leggy growth to encourage bushier, healthier foliage.
