Brugmansia arborea

Description
Brugmansia arborea, commonly known as the Angel’s Trumpet, is a shrub or small tree with large leaves and impressive, pendulous trumpet-shaped flowers that release an intense fragrance, especially in the evening. Its blooms, which can reach over 25 cm in length, appear from spring to autumn and bring an exotic, tropical charm to any garden or terrace.

Origin and history
Native to the tropical regions of South America, particularly the Andes of Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia, Brugmansia arborea belongs to the Solanaceae family. In its natural habitat, it can grow several meters tall. Historically, Andean cultures considered it a sacred plant and used it in rituals for its hallucinogenic properties — today, however, it is cultivated purely as an ornamental species.

Curiosity
All parts of Brugmansia arborea are toxic, so it should be kept away from children and pets. Despite this, it remains one of the world’s most admired ornamental plants for its spectacular blooms and enchanting scent.

Watering
This plant requires regular and abundant watering, especially during the warmest months. The soil should stay slightly moist but never waterlogged. In summer, daily watering may be necessary if grown in a pot or exposed to full sun.

Pruning
Pruning should be done in late winter or early spring. Remove dry or weak branches and lightly shape the plant to encourage new growth. Moderate pruning stimulates flowering and helps maintain a balanced, compact form.

Care
Brugmansia arborea thrives in full sun or partial shade and should be sheltered from strong winds. It prefers nutrient-rich, well-drained soil. Feed regularly during the growing season to promote abundant flowering. In colder areas, protect it from frost or grow it in a container that can be moved indoors during winter.
