Description

Origin

It is native to north-western Mexico, mainly Baja California and Sonora, where it grows naturally near oases and water sources.

History

The genus Washingtonia is named after George Washington, the first President of the United States. From the 19th century onwards, Washingtonia robusta became popular in warm-climate landscaping, especially in Mediterranean and subtropical regions, where it adapted easily.

Curiosity

Washingtonia robusta is often confused with Washingtonia filifera. The main differences are:

• A slimmer and taller trunk

• Faster growth

• Slightly softer, less rigid leaves

It is commonly seen lining coastal promenades and urban avenues.

Care

This palm is hardy and low-maintenance:

• Thrives in full sun

• Tolerates heat, wind and coastal conditions

• Adapts well to different soil types, as long as they are well-drained
