Mango ‘Keitt’

Description
The ‘Keitt’ mango is a vigorous-growing variety with a well-balanced habit, highly valued for its late-season production and excellent fruit quality. The fruits are large, with firm, juicy flesh and a sweet flavour, containing very little fibre. Unlike many other varieties, the skin remains mostly green even when fully ripe.

Origin
The ‘Keitt’ variety originated in Florida (United States), where it was selected and developed for warm and subtropical climates.

History
‘Keitt’ mango was introduced in the mid-20th century and quickly gained popularity due to its good productivity, resistance and excellent storage qualities. Thanks to these characteristics, it has become one of the most widely grown late-season mango varieties, both in home gardens and commercial orchards.

Curiosity
Unlike other mangoes, ‘Keitt’ does not show a strong colour change when ripe, remaining green. Ripeness is therefore best identified by aroma and slight softness rather than skin colour.

Care
It prefers full sun and locations protected from strong winds. Well-drained, fertile soils rich in organic matter are ideal. It is sensitive to cold, so in temperate climates it should be planted in sheltered areas or grown in containers for winter protection.

Watering
Moderate and regular watering is recommended. Increase watering during flowering and fruit development, reducing slightly before ripening. Always avoid waterlogging.

Pruning
Formative pruning is recommended during the early years to create a balanced structure. Later, light maintenance pruning and size control should be carried out after harvest, removing dead or poorly positioned branches.
