Retama monosperma

Description
Retama monosperma is an ornamental shrub with an open habit and fine, arching branches, highly appreciated for its spectacular white bloom and remarkable resilience. In spring, it becomes completely covered with small, fragrant flowers that attract bees and other pollinators. Perfect for Mediterranean gardens, slopes, coastal areas, and low-maintenance landscapes.

Origin
Native to the western Mediterranean region, particularly the southwest of the Iberian Peninsula and North Africa. It thrives in sandy soils and full sun, adapting perfectly to the coastal climate of southern Spain.

Curiosity
Beyond its beauty, this plant helps fix nitrogen in the soil, improving its fertility. Traditionally, its dry branches were used to make rustic brooms and to light ovens and fireplaces.

History
The retama has long been part of the Mediterranean landscape and is even mentioned in Spanish literature as a symbol of humility and endurance in harsh climates. Along coastal dunes in areas such as Cádiz and Málaga, it plays an important role in stabilizing the sand and preventing erosion.

Watering
Requires very little watering once established. During the first year, water occasionally until the roots are well developed. Afterwards, only occasional watering is needed during long dry periods.

Care
Prefers sandy, well-drained soils and full sun exposure. Tolerates salinity, wind, and drought. Avoid waterlogging. A very hardy and low-maintenance species.

Pruning
Regular pruning is not necessary. Remove only dry or damaged branches after flowering to maintain its natural shape. Avoid heavy pruning, as it blooms on the previous year’s wood.
