General Description
Armeria maritima, also known as sea thrift, is a perennial herb with limited growth, belonging to the Plumbaginaceae family. This small shrub features fine, very green leaves, and its pink or white spherical flowers emerge upright, offering a striking visual contrast.
Gardening Use
Ideal for rock gardens or creating small borders, its ability to contrast with stones and other natural elements makes it a popular choice for these types of landscapes.
Cultivation Requirements
To thrive properly, it requires rich soil with very good drainage and a sunny location. Ensuring proper drainage is crucial because if the soil remains moist for too long, the plant tends to split in the middle. Watering should be moderate, and the plant should only be watered when the substrate is dry. Once established, the plant requires very little water.
Maintenance and Care
It tolerates the salinity of the environment and water well, making it suitable for coastal gardens. At the end of flowering, it is recommended to remove the dry tufts of its flowers, and the shrub can be trimmed to keep it compact and healthy.
Resilience
Armeria is not afraid of cold temperatures or frosts and generally does not suffer from pests or diseases, making it relatively easy to maintain under appropriate conditions.
