Agapanthus africanus ‘Peter Pan’

Description
Agapanthus africanus ‘Peter Pan’ is a compact and highly ornamental variety, valued for its violet-blue flowers arranged in rounded clusters and its neat, structured growth. Compared to traditional agapanthus, Peter Pan has a smaller, more controlled size, making it ideal for gardens, terraces, planters, and containers.

Its long, arching green leaves form dense clumps that remain decorative for most of the year.

History and Origin

Agapanthus africanus is native to southern Africa, where it naturally grows along coastal areas and well-drained slopes. The ‘Peter Pan’ variety was selected for its compact habit and adaptability to smaller spaces, while retaining the resilience and flowering qualities typical of the species.

Care

This is a hardy, low-maintenance plant, well suited to Mediterranean climates.
It prefers full sun or light partial shade, flowering more abundantly in bright conditions. Once established, it tolerates heat and short periods of drought.

It performs well both in the ground and in pots, provided the soil drains well.

Watering

Moderate watering.
During spring and summer, keep the soil slightly moist, avoiding waterlogging. In winter, reduce watering, especially when planted in the ground.

Once established, it is relatively drought tolerant.

Pruning

No structural pruning is required.
Remove spent flower stems after blooming to keep the plant tidy and encourage future flowering. Dry or damaged leaves can be removed at the end of winter.

Curiosity

The name Agapanthus comes from the Greek agape (love) and anthos (flower), which is why it is often referred to as the “flower of love.” The ‘Peter Pan’ variety is particularly appreciated in landscaping projects for its balanced size, decorative value, and ease of care.
