Description:

Hertia, also known as Azulín, is a perennial subshrub belonging to the Asteraceae family. It is characterized by its semi-succulent, gray-green leaves and striking yellow flowers that resemble daisies. This compact plant can grow between 30 and 50 cm in height, forming small shrubs that are ideal for low-maintenance gardens.

Origin:

Hertia is native to arid and semi-arid regions of North Africa, particularly desert and coastal areas where extreme drought conditions prevail. Due to its adaptation to these environments, it has become a popular plant in Mediterranean climates and areas with challenging conditions.

History:

Hertia has traditionally been used in gardening due to its ability to thrive in extreme climates and its low maintenance requirements. Also known as "Camel Grass," it has gained popularity in sustainable garden designs and xeriscaping, where drought-resistant plants are prioritized. In recent decades, its cultivation has spread beyond its native range due to its ornamental features and resilience.

Care:

Hertia is very easy to maintain, making it an excellent choice for gardens with minimal intervention.

- Sunlight: It prefers full sun but can tolerate partial shade. It needs plenty of light to bloom abundantly.

- Soil: It adapts to various soil types, but it prefers well-drained soils with low nutrients, as it thrives in conditions similar to its native habitat.

Watering:

It is highly drought-resistant, requiring infrequent watering. It’s best to allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter or in colder climates, watering should be even more occasional as it can survive with minimal water.

Pruning:

It doesn’t need pruning. The plant naturally maintains its compact shape. However, dead flowers can be removed to keep a neat appearance and encourage new blooms.

Curiosities:

- Hertia is extremely resistant to pests and diseases, making it an excellent choice for chemical-free gardens.

- It can withstand temperatures as low as -5°C, making it frost-tolerant in mild conditions.

- In gardening, it is used as an ornamental plant in Mediterranean gardens, rockeries, and xerophytic gardens, as it pairs well with other drought-resistant species.

- The semi-succulent, grayish leaves not only contribute to its hardiness but also provide an attractive visual element when combined with other plants.

- Its ability to bloom even in adverse conditions makes it an ideal option for those looking to add color to arid landscapes.

This plant is perfect for those seeking a decorative option that requires little attention, while still staying beautiful and healthy in tough climate conditions.
