Vinca minor ‘Bowles’

Description

Vinca minor ‘Bowles’ is a fast-growing evergreen groundcover with glossy green foliage all year round. It produces abundant violet-blue flowers that are larger and more intense than the common variety, creating a strong visual impact in spring with occasional blooms throughout the year. It is ideal for covering shaded areas and underplanting in gardens.

Origin

The species Vinca minor is native to Europe and Western Asia. The ‘Bowles’ variety is a horticultural selection valued for its improved and longer-lasting flowering.

History

Traditionally used in landscaping as a reliable groundcover, Vinca minor has been planted in European gardens for centuries. It is widely appreciated for its ability to cover large areas quickly while requiring minimal maintenance.

Curiosity

It is an excellent solution for areas where grass struggles to grow, such as under trees or in shaded spaces. Its dense growth also helps suppress weeds naturally.

Care

Thrives in partial shade and full shade but can also tolerate mild sun exposure. Prefers well-drained soil and adapts to different soil types. It is hardy and easy to grow.

Watering

Moderate watering during the establishment phase. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods.

Pruning

Light trimming after the main flowering period helps maintain a compact shape and encourages fresh growth. It tolerates maintenance pruning well.
