Euphorbia ammak

Euphorbia ammak is a large, columnar succulent belonging to the Euphorbia genus. It is a striking plant commonly grown as an ornamental due to its sculptural structure and adaptability to warm, dry climates.

Description

Shape: A columnar plant that can grow up to 10 meters tall in its natural habitat, though it is usually smaller in cultivation.

Branches: Cylindrical segments with four or five prominent ribs, bluish-green in color with yellow or white margins.

Spines: Small brown or black spines along the edges of the ribs.

Flowers: Produces small yellowish flowers (cyathia) at the tips of the stems.

Origin and history

Origin: Native to the Arabian Peninsula and parts of East Africa.

History: Revered in some cultures for its resilience, it has been used as a natural barrier in gardens and fields due to its upright growth and spiny edges.

Curiosities

1. Its sap is toxic and can cause skin or eye irritation if handled without care.

2. It is an excellent plant for xerophytic gardens due to its low water requirements.

3. Euphorbia ammak is often mistaken for cacti because of its appearance, though it is botanically unrelated.

Care

- Light

Requires full sun or very bright indirect light. It thrives in sunny outdoor areas or well-lit indoor spaces.

- Soil

Needs sandy, well-draining soil, such as a cactus and succulent mix.

- Temperature

Prefers warm temperatures, between 18-30°C (65-86°F), and does not tolerate prolonged frost. It should be protected in climates where temperatures drop below 5°C (41°F).

- Watering

Water moderately during the growing season (spring and summer), allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings.

Reduce watering in autumn and winter as the plant enters a dormant period.

- Fertilizer

During the growing season, apply a diluted liquid fertilizer for succulents once a month.

- Pruning

It does not require regular pruning. If a branch is damaged, it can be cut with clean tools and left to dry completely before exposure to moisture.

Propagation

Can be propagated through cuttings, but the cuttings must be allowed to dry and form a callus before planting to prevent rot.

With its imposing shape and low maintenance, Euphorbia ammak is an ideal choice for those seeking a bold, architectural, and resilient plant.
