Description

Kniphofia ‘Hirsute Fire Dance’, commonly known as "Red Hot Poker" or "Torch Lily", is a hardy perennial that stands out for its striking bicolour flower spikes in vibrant shades of red and orange-yellow. With its upright flowering habit and grass-like foliage, it adds vertical interest and bold colour to Mediterranean, low-maintenance or contemporary-style gardens.

Origin
Native to southern Africa, Kniphofia thrives in warm, dry climates and is well-suited to sunny locations with good drainage.

History
Introduced to European gardens in the 19th century, Kniphofia has long been prized for its dramatic summer blooms and its ability to attract pollinators such as hummingbirds, butterflies and bees.

Fun Fact
The common name "Red Hot Poker" comes from the flower’s resemblance to a flaming torch. The ‘Hirsute Fire Dance’ variety is more compact than other Kniphofias, making it perfect for borders, flower beds or smaller spaces.

Care
Prefers full sun and well-drained soil. Once established, it is drought-tolerant and low maintenance—an ideal plant for dry gardens or water-wise landscapes.

Watering and Feeding
Water moderately during the growing season, allowing the top of the soil to dry out between waterings. Reduce watering in autumn and winter. Apply a balanced fertiliser in early spring to encourage healthy growth and flowering.

Pruning
Deadhead faded flowers to promote further blooming. At the end of winter, remove any dead or damaged foliage to keep the plant tidy and vigorous.
