Pennisetum advena ‘Sky Rocket’
Description
Pennisetum advena ‘Sky Rocket’ is a highly decorative ornamental grass, valued for its graceful shape and the gentle movement of its fine, arching leaves in the wind. Its foliage displays a deep green to bluish tone that turns golden or straw-colored in autumn. During late summer, it produces soft, silky plumes that add texture and light to borders, rock gardens, and modern landscapes.
Origin and history
Native to southern Africa and tropical Asia, the Pennisetum genus belongs to the Poaceae family and includes both ornamental and agricultural species. The ‘Sky Rocket’ variety is a cultivated hybrid selected for its vigor, color, and adaptability, making it ideal for warm Mediterranean climates like the Costa del Sol.
Curiosity
Unlike some Pennisetum species that can be invasive, Pennisetum advena ‘Sky Rocket’ maintains a controlled growth habit. This makes it an excellent choice for sustainable, low-maintenance gardens. Its silky plumes are also popular in dried floral arrangements for their soft texture and long-lasting appeal.
Watering
Water regularly during the first growing season to help establish strong roots. Once established, it tolerates short periods of drought well. Keep the soil slightly moist but avoid waterlogging. In summer, water two or three times a week, reducing the frequency in cooler months.
Pruning
Cut back the plant to about 10–15 cm from the ground in late winter or early spring before new shoots appear. This encourages fresh, vigorous growth and helps maintain its compact shape.
Care
Pennisetum advena ‘Sky Rocket’ thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. It adapts to different soil types but performs best in fertile, well-aerated ground. It is resistant to most pests and diseases and requires very little maintenance. Combine it with lavender, gaura, heuchera, or salvia for a natural, textured look with minimal care.
