Areca seaforthiana
(currently accepted botanical name: Archontophoenix alexandrae)
Description
An elegant, slender palm with a single, ringed trunk that can reach 10–15 metres when grown outdoors. It features long, pinnate, arching leaves in a deep green colour, giving it a light and tropical appearance. It is widely used in protected Mediterranean gardens and as a decorative plant indoors when young, provided there is plenty of light.
Origin
Native to eastern Australia, where it grows naturally in subtropical areas and humid forests, thriving in fertile, well-drained soils with regular moisture and mild temperatures.
History
For many years it was commercially known as Areca seaforthiana, although botanically it belongs to the Archontophoenix genus. Its popularity comes from its fast growth, ornamental value and good adaptation to temperate climates without severe frost.
Care
-
Light: Prefers bright light and tolerates gentle sun. Indoors, place it near a bright window.
-
Temperature: Ideal range between 15 °C and 30 °C. It does not tolerate strong frost.
-
Soil: Loose, fertile and well-drained. In pots, use a substrate suitable for palms.
-
Location: Outdoors, choose a spot sheltered from strong winds. Indoors, avoid draughts and direct heat sources.
Curiosity
Despite its common name, it is not a true areca palm (such as Areca catechu). However, its tropical look makes it one of the most popular palms for gardens, terraces and hotel landscaping.
Watering
-
Spring and summer: Regular watering, keeping the soil slightly moist without waterlogging.
-
Autumn and winter: Reduce watering, allowing the top layer of soil to dry slightly between waterings.
Excess water can cause yellowing leaves and root problems.
Pruning
It does not require frequent pruning.
Only remove dry or damaged leaves, cutting them at the base with clean tools. Avoid cutting green leaves, as this can weaken the palm.
