Coprosma ‘Lemon and Lime’
Description
Evergreen ornamental shrub with a compact, rounded habit. It is highly valued for its glossy foliage, combining deep green tones with bright lime-yellow margins that bring light and contrast to the garden throughout the year. It usually reaches around 1–1.5 m in height and width.
History
Coprosma species became popular in ornamental gardening during the 20th century thanks to their resilience and decorative foliage. ‘Lemon and Lime’ is a selected cultivar developed for its stable colour contrast and neat growth habit.
Origin
Belongs to the genus Coprosma, native mainly to New Zealand and other Pacific regions. ‘Lemon and Lime’ is a horticultural cultivar and does not occur naturally in the wild.
Curiosity
The brighter the light exposure, the more intense the lime-yellow tones become. In shadier positions, the foliage tends to appear greener and less contrasted.
Care
An easy, low-maintenance plant. It prefers sunny or bright semi-shaded positions and well-drained soil. It performs particularly well in coastal gardens and is also suitable for growing in large containers. Protection is recommended against strong or prolonged frost.
Watering
Moderate watering, especially during the first year after planting. Once established, it tolerates short dry periods, although regular watering in summer helps maintain its best appearance. Avoid waterlogging.
Pruning
Does not require heavy pruning. A light trim in late winter or early spring is enough to keep a compact shape. Occasional light pruning can also be done to balance growth or maintain density.
