Coprosma ‘Pacific Dawn’
Description
Evergreen shrub with a compact, rounded habit, valued for its glossy, variegated foliage. The leaves combine deep green tones with creamy and soft pink hues, bringing light and contrast to the garden all year round. It usually reaches around 1–1.5 m in height and spread, maintaining a neat, well-balanced shape.
History
Coprosma species became popular in ornamental gardening in Europe during the 20th century due to their resilience and decorative foliage. ‘Pacific Dawn’ is a cultivated variety selected for its balanced growth, compact form and attractive colouring.
Origin
It belongs to the Coprosma genus, which is native mainly to New Zealand and other Pacific regions. ‘Pacific Dawn’ is a horticultural cultivar and does not occur naturally in the wild.
Curiosity
The intensity of the creamy and pink tones varies with the season and sun exposure. In mild climates the colours remain quite stable, while cooler temperatures tend to enhance the contrasts in the foliage.
Care
A hardy and easy-to-maintain plant. It prefers bright locations, either full sun or partial shade, and well-drained soil. It performs well both in the ground and in containers, especially in coastal gardens. Protection is recommended against strong or prolonged frosts.
Watering
Moderate and regular during the first year after planting. Once established, it tolerates short periods of drought, although it looks best with controlled watering in summer. Avoid waterlogged soils.
Pruning
Does not require heavy pruning. A light maintenance prune at the end of winter or early spring helps maintain its compact shape and encourages denser growth. Occasional trimming can be done if it loses uniformity.
