Ipomoea alba – Moonflower
Description
Ipomoea alba, commonly known as moonflower, white morning glory, or night-blooming morning glory, is a fast-growing climbing plant with great ornamental value. It can reach several metres in length if provided with support. Its leaves are large, heart-shaped, and bright green. Its most striking feature is its large, white, fragrant, funnel-shaped flowers, which open at night and close during the day.
Origin
It belongs to the genus Ipomoea, within the Convolvulaceae family. This species comes from tropical and subtropical regions of the American continent.
History
Ipomoeas have long been grown as ornamental climbing plants because of their fast growth and beautiful flowers. In the case of Ipomoea alba, its night-blooming habit and fragrance have made it a very special plant for gardens, pergolas, and terraces enjoyed in the evening or at night.
Care
It is a vigorous and easy plant to grow in warm climates.
- Light: can grow in full sun or partial shade.
- Soil: adapts to different soil types, including clay or sandy soils, although it prefers well-drained soil rich in organic matter.
- Position: ideal for covering walls, fences, pergolas, trellises, slopes, or low walls.
- Climate: needs warm temperatures and does not tolerate frost.
Watering
Watering should be regular, making sure the soil does not dry out completely.
- In summer, it may need frequent watering, around 2 or 3 times per week.
- In spring and autumn, 1 or 2 waterings per week are usually enough.
- In winter, if the climate is mild, watering can be reduced considerably.
Pruning
Pruning helps control its growth.
- It can be pruned after flowering.
- Faded flowers, dry leaves, and untidy stems should be removed.
- It can also be trimmed back to limit its spread if it grows too much.
Curiosity
One of the most special qualities of Ipomoea alba is that its flowers open at dusk or during the night, releasing a very pleasant fragrance. This is why it is known as moonflower or night-blooming morning glory, making it perfect for gardens enjoyed in the evening.
