Description:

Crassula capitella, commonly known as Red Pagoda or Fire Plant, is a delightful succulent species belonging to the Crassulaceae family, which encompasses over 600 species of succulent plants, primarily native to South Africa. This species is renowned for its vibrant foliage and compact growth habit, making it a popular choice for both indoor and outdoor cultivation.

Appearance:

Crassula capitella typically forms low-growing, spreading mats that rarely exceed 20 cm in height. Its eye-catching leaves are adorned with shades of green and red, tapering to a sharp point. The intensity of the red hue varies depending on the amount of sunlight received, with more intense coloring observed under direct sunlight. During the summer months, it produces small spikes of lightly fragrant white flowers, adding further charm to its appearance.

Uses:

Red Pagoda succulents are commonly used in containers for patios, terraces, balconies, as well as indoor displays and as ground cover in rock gardens. Their compact size and colorful foliage make them versatile additions to various gardening settings.

Growing Conditions:

Crassula capitella thrives in well-draining soil, preferably with coarse sand and some well-decomposed leaf compost. Transplanting or planting in its final location is best done in spring to encourage optimal growth. These succulents can tolerate full sun to partial shade, although their foliage will be more vibrant in brighter light conditions. It is important to protect them from temperatures below 0°C.

Watering and Maintenance:

As drought-resistant plants, Crassula capitella requires moderate watering, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. During winter, watering should be significantly reduced as the plant enters a period of dormancy. Avoid overwatering, as it can lead to root rot. These plants typically do not require pruning or fertilization, and they are relatively pest and disease resistant.

Propagation:

Propagation of Crassula capitella is straightforward and can be done through stem cuttings during the summer season. Simply take healthy cuttings and allow them to callous before planting them in well-draining soil. With proper care, they will readily root and establish new plants, allowing for easy propagation and expansion of your succulent collection.
