Name: Freesia (Freesia spp.)
Origin: Native to South Africa, particularly the Cape region.

History:
Freesias were discovered in the 19th century and named after German botanist Friedrich Freese. They quickly became beloved for their sweet, long-lasting fragrance and delicate, colorful blooms. Often associated with friendship and innocence, freesias are widely used in bouquets, gardens, and floral arrangements around the world.

Care:
Freesias are bulbous plants that bloom in spring or early summer and are relatively easy to care for if given the right conditions:

  • Light: They need plenty of natural light and do well in full sun, especially in the morning or in mild climates.

  • Temperature: Ideal range is between 13 °C and 21 °C. Freesias prefer mild weather and do not tolerate frost.

  • Location: Suitable for pots, garden beds, and planters. They can also be grown indoors if they receive bright indirect light.

  • Soil: Loose, fertile, and well-drained soil. A mix of universal potting soil with sand or perlite is ideal.

  • Planting: Plant bulbs about 5 cm deep, pointed end up, with 7–10 cm of spacing between each.

Fun Fact:
Freesia is one of the most popular flowers in perfumery, prized for its clean, floral, slightly citrusy scent. In the language of flowers, it symbolizes trust, lasting friendship, and innocence.

Watering:

  • Keep the soil slightly moist during the growing and blooming period.

  • Avoid waterlogging, as it can cause the bulbs to rot.

  • Once the leaves begin to die back after flowering, reduce watering until stopping completely during dormancy.

Pruning:

  • No major pruning needed, but spent blooms should be removed to encourage further flowering.

  • After the foliage has completely dried out, it can be trimmed at the base.

  • Bulbs can be dug up and stored in a cool, dry place until the next planting season.
