Hyophorbe lagenicaulis

Bottle Palm

Description
Hyophorbe lagenicaulis, commonly known as the Bottle Palm, is an ornamental palm instantly recognisable by its swollen, bottle-shaped trunk, which narrows towards the crown. It has elegant, arching pinnate leaves in a bright green colour, giving it a refined and exotic appearance. It is a slow-growing palm with a compact and sculptural form, ideal as a focal point in gardens.

History
Its unusual silhouette quickly made it a prized species in tropical and subtropical landscaping. During the 20th century it became increasingly popular in private gardens and landscape projects in warm climates, valued mainly for its distinctive shape rather than its size.

Origin
This palm is endemic to the island of Mauritius, in the Indian Ocean. In its natural habitat, wild populations have declined significantly, making it a species of particular botanical interest.

Care

  • Light: full sun to bright partial shade. In very hot climates, some protection from strong midday sun is beneficial.

  • Location: outdoors. It can also be grown in large pots for many years due to its slow growth.

  • Temperature: prefers warm climates and does not tolerate frost.

  • Soil: light, fertile, and very well-drained.

Watering
Regular but moderate. Allow the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. Waterlogging must be avoided, especially when grown in containers. Reduce watering frequency in winter.

Pruning
Very minimal. Only remove fully dry or damaged fronds. No structural pruning is required.

Curiosity
The swollen trunk acts as a water and nutrient reserve, an adaptation to dry periods in its native environment. This distinctive feature is what gives the Bottle Palm its name and makes it one of the most visually striking palms used in ornamental gardening.
