Windmill Palm

Description
Trachycarpus fortunei, commonly known as the windmill palm, is a slender palm with a slow to moderate growth rate. Its trunk is covered with brown fibrous material, giving it a rustic, natural look, while the leaves are large, fan-shaped and deep green, slightly drooping at the tips. Its balanced form and elegant appearance make it a popular choice for many garden styles.

History
Introduced to Europe in the 19th century, it quickly gained popularity due to its ability to tolerate colder climates compared to most palm species. Since then, it has become a classic palm in parks, gardens and private landscapes across Europe.

Origin
It is native to mountainous regions of central and eastern Asia, particularly China, where it grows in cool, humid environments, sometimes at relatively high altitudes.

Care

  • Light: full sun or partial shade. Very adaptable to different exposures.

  • Location: outdoor use. Suitable for gardens, patios or large containers.

  • Temperature: extremely cold-hardy; once established, it can withstand severe frosts.

  • Soil: adaptable to many soil types, provided they are well drained.

Watering
Moderate. It prefers regular watering, especially during warm months, although it tolerates short dry periods once well rooted. Watering should be reduced in winter.

Pruning
Low maintenance. Remove only completely dry or damaged leaves. Green leaves should be kept, as they contribute to the palm’s health and protection.

Curiosity
Trachycarpus fortunei is considered one of the most cold-resistant palms in the world, making it an excellent choice for Mediterranean, Atlantic and even continental climates where other palms would not survive.
