Coprosma ‘Evening Glow’

Description
An evergreen shrub highly valued for its glossy, colourful foliage. The leaves show a green base with pink, copper and purple tones that intensify with cooler temperatures and good sun exposure. It has a compact, rounded habit, usually reaching around 1–1.5 m in height and width.

History
Coprosma species began to be widely used in European ornamental gardening during the 20th century, appreciated for their hardiness and decorative foliage. ‘Evening Glow’ is a modern cultivar selected for the richness and contrast of its leaf colour.

Origin
It belongs to the genus Coprosma, which is mainly native to New Zealand and the Pacific region. ‘Evening Glow’ is a horticultural cultivar developed from these species.

Curiosity
Leaf colour changes with the seasons and light exposure: the more sun and cooler the climate, the stronger the pink and reddish tones. In mild climates, the plant tends to keep a greener appearance throughout the year.

Care
A tough, low-maintenance plant. It prefers bright locations, either full sun or partial shade. It performs well in coastal gardens and in containers, provided the soil is well drained. Protection is recommended against strong or prolonged frosts.

Watering
Moderate and regular watering, especially during the first year and in summer. Once established, it tolerates some drought, although controlled watering during dry periods is beneficial. Avoid waterlogging.

Pruning
No strict pruning is required. Light pruning for shaping or cleaning is recommended in late winter or early spring to maintain a compact form and encourage denser growth. It can also be lightly trimmed after summer if it loses shape.
