Koeleria glauca

Description

Koeleria glauca is a compact perennial ornamental grass with a neat, rounded shape. It is especially valued for its fine blue-grey foliage, which provides texture and contrast throughout the year. In late spring to early summer, it produces light beige flower spikes that rise gently above the foliage.

Origin

Native to Central and Eastern Europe, where it naturally grows in dry meadows, sandy soils and well-drained open areas.

History

Originally found in dry natural habitats, Koeleria glauca has become increasingly popular in modern landscaping due to its resilience and minimalist aesthetic. It is widely used in Mediterranean-style and low-water gardens.

Curiosity

Its blue tone becomes more intense when planted in poor, well-drained soils under full sun. It is an excellent alternative to traditional lawn grass in dry areas and combines beautifully with other ornamental grasses and drought-tolerant plants.

Care

Requires full sun to maintain its distinctive blue colour. Prefers light, sandy or gravelly soils with excellent drainage. It does not tolerate waterlogging. Highly resistant to heat, wind and dry conditions.

Watering

Low. Moderate watering is recommended during the first year to establish roots. Once established, it tolerates extended dry periods and only needs occasional watering during very hot summers.

Pruning

Cut back dried foliage at the end of winter or early spring to encourage fresh growth. It requires minimal maintenance and no frequent pruning.
