Surfinia – Petunia × atkinsiana
Description
Surfinia is the commercial name used for a group of trailing, very floriferous petunias belonging to Petunia × atkinsiana, the most widely grown garden hybrid. It is known for its trailing or spreading habit, vigorous growth, and abundant flowering, with trumpet-shaped blooms in a wide range of colours. It is especially popular for pots, planters, hanging baskets, and balconies because of its ability to cover space quickly and provide colour for many months.
Origin
Petunia × atkinsiana is not a wild species as such, but a horticultural hybrid, mainly derived from crosses between Petunia axillaris and Petunia integrifolia. The petunia genus originates from South America, and this is also the genetic origin of modern surfinias.
History
The modern garden petunia, Petunia × atkinsiana, was developed in the nineteenth century and is associated with the nurseryman James Atkins. Over time, it became one of the most popular seasonal flowering plants in the world. Surfinia later appeared as a selected line of petunias bred for their trailing habit, heavy flowering, and ornamental use on terraces and balconies. Petunia × atkinsiana has also long been known as Petunia × hybrida.
Care
It is a very rewarding plant when grown in the right conditions.
-
Light: needs plenty of sun to flower well.
-
Soil: prefers a fertile, light, and well-drained substrate.
-
Position: ideal for outdoor use, especially in bright places protected from dry winds.
-
Temperature: does not tolerate frost well.
Watering
Surfinia needs regular watering, especially in late spring and summer, when it flowers most heavily.
-
In pots and hanging baskets, it may need more water than when planted in the ground.
-
The substrate should be kept slightly moist, but never waterlogged.
-
During very hot weather, more frequent watering may be needed.
Pruning
Pruning and general maintenance help extend the flowering period.
-
It is advisable to remove faded flowers and dry parts regularly.
-
A light trim can be done if the plant becomes too long or loses its shape.
-
Pinching back or trimming in mid-season can help it regrow more densely and continue flowering in a more compact form.
Curiosity
An interesting fact is that Surfinia is not the botanical name of the plant, but a commercial series within the group of hybrid petunias. Botanically, the correct reference is usually Petunia × atkinsiana, although for many years it has also been widely known as Petunia hybrida.
