Carnelia Carnation – Dianthus caryophyllus ‘Carnelia’

Description

The Carnelia carnation is a compact flowering plant, highly appreciated for its abundant and long-lasting blooms. It usually grows to around 30–45 cm in height, with narrow, lance-shaped, grey-green leaves. Its flowers can appear in shades of red, pink, white, salmon, yellow, and bicolour combinations, making it a very decorative choice for both pots and gardens.

Origin

Carnelia is a cultivated selection of Dianthus caryophyllus, a species traditionally linked to the Mediterranean region.

History

Carnations are among the most classic ornamental plants in gardening and floriculture. The Carnelia series has become popular for its compact habit, good resistance, and strong flowering performance, which makes it especially suitable for pots, planters, balconies, and borders.

Care

It is a rewarding plant when grown in suitable conditions.

  • Light: prefers sunny positions, although it can also do well in bright partial shade.
  • Soil: needs a well-drained substrate to prevent root problems.
  • Position: ideal for pots, planters, balconies, and outdoor gardens.
  • Temperature: it does not tolerate strong frost well.

Watering

Watering should be moderate.

  • The substrate should be kept slightly moist, but never waterlogged.
  • During flowering, especially in pots, it may need a little more regular watering.
  • Good drainage is important at all times.

Pruning

Pruning is simple and helps extend the flowering period.

  • It is advisable to remove faded flowers regularly to encourage new blooms.
  • Dry or untidy stems can also be cut back to keep the plant compact and neat.

Curiosity

One of the most interesting features of the Carnelia carnation is the wide range of colours it can offer within the same commercial line, including both solid shades and bicolour flowers. It is also widely used to provide colour during spring and summer, thanks to its long and decorative flowering period.
