Rojo Brillante Persimmon – Diospyros kaki ‘Rojo Brillante’

Description

The Rojo Brillante persimmon is a deciduous fruit tree highly valued for its large, attractive fruits, which turn a deep orange to reddish colour when ripe. It has an elegant habit, with a rounded crown and large glossy green leaves that can develop very decorative tones in autumn. Its fruit is known for its sweet and pleasant flesh. Depending on ripeness and the treatment used to remove astringency, it can be eaten either firm or soft.

Origin

The ‘Rojo Brillante’ variety is a well-known selection in Spain, especially associated with the Ribera Alta area in Valencia. The species Diospyros kaki originates from Asia, but this variety has become one of the most representative persimmon cultivars grown in Spain.

History

Rojo Brillante began as a local variety that gradually became very important because of its fruit quality, large size, and strong commercial appeal. Today, it is one of the best-known persimmon varieties on the Spanish market, especially as an autumn fruit.

Care

It is a fruit tree that performs well with good exposure and regular basic care.

  • Light: needs full sun.
  • Soil: prefers fertile, deep, and well-drained soil.
  • Position: ideal for orchards, large gardens, and cultivated areas.
  • Climate: adapts well to warm and temperate climates, although it should be protected from strong frost when young.

Watering

Watering should be moderate and regular.

  • During the first years, it needs more attention to establish properly.
  • During growth and fruit development, it benefits from consistent watering.
  • It is important to avoid both prolonged drought and excess water.

Pruning

Pruning should be moderate and aimed at maintaining a balanced canopy.

  • In the first years, formative pruning is usually carried out.
  • Later, maintenance pruning helps remove dry, crossing, or poorly placed branches.
  • It is also important to improve light and air circulation inside the crown to support fruit quality and make harvesting easier.

Curiosity

One of the most interesting things about the Rojo Brillante persimmon is that its fruit can be eaten in two different ways: very ripe, with a softer texture, or firm and crisp after the astringency has been removed. This is one of the reasons why it is such a highly valued commercial variety.
