Pachyphytum oviferum belongs to the genus Pachyphytum, of the family Crassulaceae, which includes 17 species of succulent plants native to Mexico.

This plant is commonly known as Piedra de Luna (Moonstone) and comes from the Mexican state of San Luis Potosí.

They are small succulent plants with whitish stems and thick flattened egg-shaped leaves with a waxy coating that gives them a whitish colour.

They produce flower stalks with small greenish-white bell-shaped flowers. They flower in spring.

Moonstone is slow growing and easy to cultivate, often used in greenhouses and in pots on balconies, terraces and well-lit interiors.

This plant needs a very sunny exposure and a warm, dry climate. It is important that in winter they rest at a temperature between 5 and 10 ºC.

The soil could be a commercial cactus substrate or a mixture, in the same proportions, of well-washed coarse siliceous sand and leaf mould.

It is advisable to wait until the plant has dried out completely before watering again. In winter they should be watered at most once every 40-45 days.

A fertiliser based on mineral fertiliser for cacti at the beginning of spring will be sufficient.

They are not pruned but we can remove the withered flower stems.

Like almost all succulent plants, their main enemy is excess watering or humidity, not waterlogging.

They can be propagated quite easily by making leaf or stem cuttings in summer and from seeds sown in spring in a seedbed.
