Origin and Description:
Aeonium arboreum atropurpureum, commonly known as Black Head, belongs to the Crassulaceae family and is native to the Canary Islands. This particular variety, named "Schwarzkopf" (Black Head in German), features large rosettes of leaves at the end of its stems, which are black or purple in warm climates like the Mediterranean. It produces small yellow flowers in conical inflorescences and blooms from winter to early spring.
History and Use:
Aeonium arboreum atropurpureum is commonly used outdoors in pots on terraces and in rock gardens, as well as indoors as a houseplant.
Care:
It requires full sun or partial shade and tolerates cold well. The soil should be well-drained to prevent waterlogging. It should be watered regularly during spring and especially in summer, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings, and reducing watering almost completely in winter, as it is drought-resistant. It does not require pruning, but can be fertilized monthly with a fertilizer specifically for succulents.
Curiosity:
Under adequate sun exposure, the leaves of Aeonium arboreum atropurpureum will gradually darken, intensifying their black coloration.
